To understand the benefits of Restorative yoga it is helpful to have a general knowledge of the nervous system.
1. The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord. It helps us to make decisions and respond to everyday occurrences.
2. The peripheral nervous system touches our limbs and organs. It gathers sensory data from the body and sends it to the central nervous system so it can decide what to do.
3. Within the peripheral nervous system is the autonomic nervous system (ANS) which is connected to physical processes like breathing, heart rate, digestion, and immunity.
§ The autonomic nervous system has two branches: the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.
