Sympathetic Nervous System

SYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM (SNS)

Chronic stress of any kind overstimulates our sympathetic nervous system (SNS) which is often called the “fight or flight” system. The SNS:

· Decreases digestion/elimination
· Increases heart rate/blood pressure
· Shortens breath
· Prepares us to fight/flight/freeze for protection

Continuous over-stimulation of the SNS leads to physical and psychological imbalances causing illness, distress, and limits our ability to fully enjoy life. Chronic stress contributes to:

· Hypertension
· Obesity
· Atherosclerosis
· Insomnia
· Fatigue
· Diabetes
· Heart attack
· Infertility
· Irritable bowel syndrome
· Susceptibility to acute infections
· Gastritis/reflux
· Anxiety & depression
