Parasympathetic Nervous System & Vagus Nerve

PARASYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM (PNS)

**Restorative yoga stimulates our parasympathetic nervous system** which is often called the “rest & digest” or “calm & connect” system. The PNS:

· Increases digestion
· Increases immune response
· Slows heart rate
· Lowers blood pressure
· Slows the breath
· Allows us to rest, release tension, and recoup

An important part of the PNS is the “wandering nerve,” the vagus nerve. It accounts for 75% of all PNS activity. The vagus nerve helps to calm us down after stressful events. Research has demonstrated that the vagus nerve is positively affected by yoga and meditation. Several studies indicate that good vagal tone leads to more resilience. While poor vagal tone is associated with depression and chronic pain. The vagus nerve:

· Regulates heart rate
· Regulates breathing
· Regulates digestion
· Controls muscle movement
· Transmits a variety of biochemicals

By stimulating the PNS, restorative yoga offers potential health benefits. Below is a list of just some of the benefits:

· Promotes healing after surgery/injury
· Lowers cortisol (stress hormone) levels
· Relieves tension and stress
· Calms the nervous system
· Relaxes sore muscles
· Helps reduce obesity
· Relieves sciatica
· Strengthens the immune system
